Do you need a permit?
Check with the city
Rock Hill has a Community Forestry program, a City Forester and a Tree Commission, and its development codes require landscaping during land development and redevelopment. We could not confirm from a City of Rock Hill source whether a homeowner needs a permit to remove a tree on their own developed lot, so call before you cut rather than relying on a guess.
Worth knowing
- Some trees that look like street trees are actually planted on private property and are therefore privately owned and maintained. Confirm which side of the line your tree is on before scheduling work.
- If a tree fails from natural causes and damages a utility line or pole, cleanup of the debris is the property owner's responsibility.
What we could not confirm
We would rather tell you what we don't know than guess. Call the office below to confirm these before you cut.
- — Whether a permit is required to remove a tree on private property, and any diameter threshold that would trigger one.
- — Any protected, significant or heritage tree designation and its size definition.
- — Permit fees, application steps and penalties.
- — The ordinance section governing tree removal. The city's website blocks automated access, so these answers have to come by phone.
