Why PermitDeck directories are different

Most contractor sites are lead-gen marketplaces. We built the opposite: a permit-first reference where the listings happen to exist because the data already has to.

Real local permit data

Every city page ships with the actual building department, real fee schedules, and the code version the jurisdiction adopted. No "varies by location."

Verified licensing

Listings are cross-checked against state licensing boards. Lapsed licenses or dead sites get soft-deleted on quarterly sweeps.

City-level cost data

Project cost ranges are computed from regional multipliers, not a national average. A Houston roofing job and a Manhattan roofing job should never show the same number.

Best in City awards

One contractor per city per year earns our gold badge — based on review quality, trust signals, and verification. Earned, never sold.

For homeowners: start with the permit, then the pro

Most sites send you straight to a lead form. PermitDeck flips it. Start with the permit rules, fee schedule, and code requirements for your city — so by the time you pick a contractor, you already know what the permit should cost, how long it takes, and what questions to ask.

For contractors: free listing, free claim

Every listing on PermitDeck is free to claim. Once claimed, you control the phone, website, description, hours, specialties, and up to 4 photos — plus respond to homeowner questions as they come in. No monthly fee, no per-lead charge, no long-term contract.

Frequently asked questions

What makes PermitDeck directories different from Angi, HomeAdvisor, or Thumbtack?

Every city page on PermitDeck ships with real local permit fees, the city's actual building department, the state's actual licensing board, and verified cost data for that location. Most contractor directories show a national average and a long list of "pros" they paid to be there. We are permit-first — we own the verification moat.

How are contractors verified?

Every listing is cross-checked against the state licensing board roster (where one exists) and Google Business Profile. We soft-delete listings with dead websites, wrong locations, or license lapses on a quarterly pass. The "Best in City" gold badge is earned — not bought — and awarded once per city per year.

Is it free for contractors to be listed?

Yes. Listings are free to view and free to claim. Contractors can claim their listing, edit their info, add up to 4 photos, and manage responses — at no cost. PermitDeck does not charge contractors to appear in search results.

I own a business — how do I add it to a directory?

Every city page has an "Add Your Business" link. Submit your company details and we'll verify and publish. If your company is already listed, click "Claim This Listing" on your profile — if your email matches your business website's domain we verify automatically, otherwise our team reviews within 2 business days.

Which trades will PermitDeck cover?

We focus on permit-required trades. Currently live: deck builders and tree services. Electricians is next, followed by plumbers. We will not expand into trades where permits are rare (painting, landscaping) because our verification model only delivers value when local permit rules matter.
